APIF and DAISY Consortium giving free expert training in production of accessible books for visually impaired readers
The APIF and the DAISY Consortium, a world authority on publishing for people with visual impairments and other print disabilities, are offering African publishers free expert training on the production of accessible works.
Under the scheme, African publishers are invited to join a first webinar called Accessible Publishing in Africa – the Fundamentals, which will be delivered in English, French, and Arabic, respectively on 5, 6, and 7 July.
DAISY’s international experts will explain how accessible publishing practices open books to people with print disabilities, including blindness, low vision, and learning disabilities. Participants will also share their own experiences, which will be used to help shape technical accessible publishing training to be offered later this year.
The July webinars will cover the fundamentals about print disabilities and the assistive technologies they use, as well as how publishers can better serve print disabled readers, and why it is mutually beneficial to do so.
Publishers that further pursue the programme with DAISY will be able to secure APIF financing to support the production of accessible works and their introduction to the market.
IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi, the architect of the Africa Publishing Innovation Fund, said: ‘It’s so important - particularly in these tempestuous times - that publishers play a part in ensuring that no one is denied access to information and content. Accessible publishing opens the literary world to everyone, regardless of physical status, and as a founder member of the Accessible Books Consortium, this is a core principle of the work we do at the IPA. We hope that by dedicating APIF financing to this specific issue we can make a big contribution to increasing the range of accessible African works available to the readers that need them.’
DAISY Consortium CEO Richard Orme said: ‘Many publishers in Africa are accelerating their adoption of digital publishing solutions, especially following the global pandemic. This also provides the opportunity to create publications that can be read by children and adults who were previously excluded, including those with blindness and low vision. Accessible publications are better publications for everyone, and we’re excited to share the practical steps that can be taken by publishers to reach new audiences and address long-standing inequities.’

Le Fonds d'innovation pour l'édition en Afrique et DAISY Consortium offrent une formation professionnelle gratuite à la production de livres accessibles pour les lecteurs malvoyants
Le Fonds d'innovation pour l'édition en Afrique (APIF), un programme de don codirigé par l'organisation philanthropique Dubai Cares et l'Association internationale des éditeurs (IPA), et DAISY Consortium, une autorité internationale dans le domaine de l'édition pour les personnes malvoyantes ou incapables de lire les imprimés, proposent aux éditeurs africains une formation professionnelle gratuite sur la production d'ouvrages accessibles.
Dans ce cadre, les éditeurs africains sont invités à participer à un premier séminaire en ligne intitulé Publication accessible en Afrique -– Les fondamentaux, qui sera disponible en anglais, français et arabe, respectivement les 5, 6 et 7 juillet.
Les experts internationaux de DAISY vont expliquer comment les pratiques de publication accessible ouvrent les livres aux personnes qui ne peuvent pas lire les imprimés, notamment les personnes aveugles, malvoyantes et ayant des difficultés d'apprentissage. Les participants pourront également partager leurs propres expériences, qui seront utilisées pour élaborer la formation technique sur la publication accessible qui sera disponible plus tard dans l'année.
Les webinaires de juillet aborderont les fondamentaux de l'incapacité à lire les imprimés et les technologies auxiliaires qu'ils utilisent, ainsi que comment les éditeurs peuvent mieux servir les lecteurs incapables de lire les imprimés, et pourquoi il est mutuellement bénéfique de le faire.
Les éditeurs qui poursuivent plus avant le programme avec DAISY pourront bénéficier du financement de l'APIF pour soutenir la production des œuvres accessibles et leur introduction sur le marché.

أعلن "الصندوق الإفريقي للابتكار في النشر"، برنامج المنح الذي أطلقه كلُّ من "الاتحاد الدولي للناشرين" ومؤسسة "دبي العطاء"، عن تعاونه مع "اتحاد ديزي الدولي" للنشر المخصص لذوي الإعاقات البصرية، لتوفير التدريب المجاني لناشري إفريقيا في مجال إنتاج الكتب الميسّرة.
ودعا الصندوق ناشري القارة الإفريقية لحضور أولى المحاضرات الافتراضية التي تحمل عنوان "النشر الميسّر في إفريقيا: الأساسيات" والتي تُقدّم عبر الإنترنت باللغات الإنجليزية والفرنسية والعربية، في الخامس والسادس والسابع من يوليو 2022 على التوالي.
ويستعرض خبراء "اتحاد ديزي الدولي" خلال المحاضرات ممارسات النشر الميسّر التي تضمن وصول الكتب إلى ذوي الإعاقات البصرية من المكفوفين وضعاف البصر، بالإضافة إلى من يعانون من صعوبات التعلّم، كما سيتبادل المشاركون خبراتهم وتجاربهم للمساعدة في التمهيد لدورة تدريبية تقنية شاملة للنشر الميسّر سيتم تنظيمها خلال العام الجاري.
وتتناول المحاضرات التي تعقد (عن بُعد) في يوليو المقبل أساسيات تيسير الكتب لذوي الإعاقات البصرية والتقنيات المستخدمة لمساعدتهم على الوصول إلى الكتب، وسبل تقديم الناشرين للخدمات الميسّرة التي تساعد القراء ذوي الإعاقات على القراءة، وأهمية الاستفادة المتبادلة للطرفين من تلك الممارسات، وسيتمكن الناشرون المشاركون في البرنامج من الاستفادة من إمكانية الحصول على الدعم المالي لإنتاج كتب ميسّرة وطرحها في السوق.
وقالت الشيخة بدور القاسمي، رئيسة الاتحاد الدولي للناشرين: "من المهم جداً، خصوصاً في هذه الأوقات الصعبة، أن يلعب الناشرون دوراً أكبر في ضمان حصول كافة فئات المجتمع على المعرفة والوصول إلى الكتب، حيث يفتح النشر أبواب الدخول إلى عالم الأدب أمام الجميع، وهذا هو المبدأ الأساسي الذي نتبناه في الاتحاد الدولي للناشرين كعضو مؤسس في اتحاد الكتب الميسرة، ونحن واثقون بأن التمويل الذي يقدمه الصندوق الإفريقي للابتكار في النشر لدعم هذه القضية سيسهم بتعزيز نطاق الكتب الميسّرة في القارة الإفريقيّة، ويضمن وصول القراء ذوي الإعاقات البصرية إليها".
بدوره قال ريتشارد أورمي، المدير التنفيذي لاتحاد ديزي الدولي: "يعمل العديد من الناشرين في جميع أرجاء القارة الإفريقية على تسريع تبني الحلول الرقمية في قطاع النشر، وخاصةً في أعقاب أزمة كورونا، حيث توفر هذه الحلول الفرصة لإنتاج أعمال يمكن للأطفال والكبار ذوي الإعاقات البصرية قراءتها، لهذا نحن سعداء بالمشاركة في تقديم خطوات عمليّة يمكن أن يتخذها الناشرون للوصول إلى فئات أكبر من الجمهور، والتغلّب على التحديات المجتمعيّة وأوجه عدم المساواة التي تواجه ذوي الإعاقات البصرية".
